Rising Star Del Mao Ibiza wedding photographer

Nominee for the Rising Stars 2020 by the New-York Rangefinder magazine

I can finally reveal that I have been nominated for Rangefinder Top 30 Rising Star this year. My selection didn’t make it but it is something I am incredibly proud of.

These last 12 months have been probably the most challenging of my life :

  • switching my career at 39 to become a wedding photographer in Ibiza,
  • divorcing,
  • having to raise by myself two (amazing) young kids,
  • and, on the top of that, facing the COVID crisis was really not a piece of cake 🙃.

So, no need to say that this nomination is the absolutely highlight of my first year of full time wedding photographer: this gave me a lot of hope, motivation and encouragement that I am on the good track!

When they asked me to submit the 30 photos, one gallery at a time (and one more time)  I’ve been submerged by emotions : i felt again the Love, the connections, I heard the laughts, saw the joys… and something I even got tears in my eyes  reminding me some very special moments, speetches and words.

Then, I realized  – one more time – the power of photography which it is not only about story telling, recording beautiful memories and legacy but also about making you FEEL & LIVE moments… again and again…

It is very powerful.

I love it. I love my job

Thank you to all the people who have supported me and a big congratulation to the 30 finalists who have won this year!

NB : Rangefinder is the official magazine of WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographer International), probably the most important association in the world for wedding and portrait photographers. To be part of the competition you have to receive an invitation and been in business full time for 5 years or less. The Rising Stars are chosen for “their exceeding talent, as well as their spark for directing the industry to new, exciting heights”. The magazine has been very exclusive in their selections for new talents, only 30 people per year are chosen in the entire world. Most of the people I follow and admire are previous years finalists.

This list makes me dreams every year

Couple session in the wood, Ibiza

Michelle and Dinu are cool, fun and super in love.

Dinu messaged me one month ago to organize this photograhy session, in their beloved Ibiza, as a birthday gift for his lovely wife.

We met last week and it was just perfect. I am looking forward to show you this beautiful session on the beach, on the rocks but also in the wood : we went everywhere 🙂

I hope you like it as much as I do.

Beautiful couple session

Ahhh this session was incredible!  I had a blast photographing this couple session of Dasi and Reinhardt on the beach.

Their passion and love for each other was evident throughout the session so it made my job so effortless.

Overcast weather is my favorite and I am pretty happy with the result.

This image remind me a poem of Pablo Neruda I like a lot. Here it is.

Here I love you.
In the dark pines the wind disentangles itself.
The moon glows like phosphorous on the vagrant waters.
Days, all one kind, go chasing each other.

The snow unfurls in dancing figures.
A silver gull slips down from the west.
Sometimes a sail. High, high stars.
Oh the black cross of a ship.

Sometimes I get up early and even my soul is wet.
Far away the sea sounds and resounds.
This is a port.

Here I love you.
Here I love you and the horizon hides you in vain.
I love you still among these cold things.
Sometimes my kisses go on those heavy vessels
that cross the sea towards no arrival.
I see myself forgotten like those old anchors.

The piers sadden when the afternoon moors there.
My life grows tired, hungry to no purpose.
I love what I do not have. You are so far.
My loathing wrestles with the slow twilights.
But night comes and starts to sing to me.

The moon turns its clockwork dream.
The biggest stars look at me with your eyes.
And as I love you, the pines in the wind
want to sing your name with their leaves of wire.

Couple session on the beach

I captured these two last week on my favorite beach in Ibiza, Las Salinas.

They were both a bit nervous as it was their first time in front a camera but they did great and they are the sweetest, really.

They are going to get married in October and Ruth just learnt she was pregnant. They chose to do an elopement here in Ibiza and luckily they chose me.

It was a really nice, relax but emotional session. I can’t wait to show you more about it.

The love between them is contagious!

I really like this photograph, do you feel the tension?

Family session in Ibiza

Every Monday, I am going to published one picture I love.

I captured this photograph few weeks ago on the beach (Ibiza) and I can’t wait to show you more about this session.

The love between a mother and her child is just everything, it’s one of the things that moves me the most in the world to tell the truth.

Being able to witness this and capture it forever makes my job one of the most beautiful in the world!

Maternity session in Ibiza

It’s been a while since I want to share some pictures of my last maternity session on the beach.

The love that these two (soon three !!) have for each other is really something special to see. It’s really an endearing couple, Alexandra is sweet, reserved, adorable and Kevin super nice and really funny. They came to our magical island to rest a bit and discover the region. Alexandra was five months pregnant and needed calm. Coming at this time of the year was just perfect. Ibiza is splendid at this time: the weather was mild, the light perfect and there are not too many people.

Passionate about photography, Alexandra likes to make photo albums for all the major events of her life (travel, wedding, etc) in order to keep a tangible memory over time and to be able to transmit it later.

It was therefore the perfect opportunity for a maternity session on the beach.

I asked them to join me on one of my favorite beaches in Ibiza and we spent the end of the afternoon together. We had more acquainted with a drink and the session started.

Alexandra changed twice because she wanted to have pictures with her beautiful belly apparent. She wears beautifully one of my dresses and the sublime tule skirt is the one she wore at the last wedding she attended.

The session went extremely well, they are delighted with the photos and have already told me to wave when I’m on Paris for photos with baby 🙂

and yes : Photographing happiness with nice and happy people: I really do the best job in the world!

I wish them all the happiness of the world for this new adventure.

Aneta & Olli : Emotive mother & son session

It is with delight that I remember this “mother & son” photo shoot with Aneta and Olli, near Las Salinas, one of my favorite beaches in Ibiza.

It was funny, epic, quick. Here’s how it was organized and then shot.

Before I start, you should know that my favorite color is blue. Mixed with yellow, I find it even more beautiful: it reminds me the summer, the holidays, the sun, the sea … in short, happiness for the Mediterranean girl that I am!

A few days ago, I organized a photo shoot with the radiant Aneta and her lovely little family (you’ll know more about it in a while, wait, they’re so beautiful!). On the way, I noticed beautiful yellow flower fields that I immediately found immensely inspiring. Instantly, I knew I had to photograph a mother and her baby. The images were already in my head … I was ready, I only needed models.

Well, you know what? Within the next hour the Universe brought them to me on a tray (yes, yes).

While chatting with Aneta and her husband, Chris, I learned out of the blue that Chris’s favorite color is yellow and that, like me, they have noticed those flower fields on the way.

In less than two minutes, the appointment was made for next week. Rather between two days of rain to be exact.

The dress was chosen (one of my favorite: blue, in silk, sublime) and I asked Aneta to leave Olli in body so that my view and my camera take advantage of her adorable chubby thighs ☺

We ended up on the side of the road in the middle of the afternoon. Aneta changed in two minutes without flinching (she’s a rockstar!), Olli was in a good mood.

We were ready.

To begin, it was necessary to cross a first field to reach the one in flowers … and there for two minutes, it was literally a nightmare: there were hundreds of mosquitoes everywhere. A nightmare !!! Fortunately, our little Olli was covered and who knows why… but no one was stung.

Arrived among the flowers, we were reassured and happy. On the other hand, it was a bit chilly outside so it was necessary to be very quick so that nobody gets cold.

Believe it or not, but the photo shoot lasted for only 10 minutes, yes only 10! Indeed, I can work quickly if necessary because I never forget to prepare myself before a shooting.

Vision, preparation, trust and connection are my watchwords.

The magic worked instantly, everything was perfect: the connection between the mother & son was total, Olli was in a great mood, we already knew each other so trust was there and Aneta was very easy to direct. We were in this famous artistic “flow” that I love and match with their radiant personalities well … I think the images speak for themselves, don’t they… ?

Here are some of them. I hope you’ll like it as much as I do.

See you soon,

PS: for all family photography sessions (or wedding), do not hesitate to contact me to discuss it. I will be happy to help.

Diana + Bo : a magic couple

My first shooting of the year was a daydream: I had the opportunity to photograph Diana and Bo, an adorable and incredibly photogenic couple. This is how it happened.

Diana wanted pictures of her, her fiancé and all their animals.

So we quickly agreed to an appointment in early January at home.

A week before, we organized everything and I helped Diana to choose the most photogenic clothes (and accessories) of their wardrobes. Do not forget that we were at the beginning of January : so it was not so obvious to leave coats, big jumpers, etc. aside. Also, I wanted to see some skin because nothing is more beautiful in photo! ☺

However, we managed it like queens (and had a lot o  fun). Diana really made my job easier thanks to her determination, efficiency and really good taste.

Everything was ready and organized. I only had to meet the real McCoy.

What was my surprise to discover that they lived in a little corner of paradise, in the heart of Morna Valley, Ibiza. Their view of the campo was breathtaking, their house very pretty, full of charm and especially full of animals: seven dogs and three cats please!

Indeed, in addition of  being at the head of a successful holiday rental business (Great Villas Ibiza), to be so nice looking and a super nice couple, these two are both volunteers at Mojis Animal Santuary … and I imagine there was so much room in their hearts that over time they decided to adopt and expand their families. Love has no limit as they say. I find it beautiful and inspiring.

So, it is with great pleasure that I finally met this original couple with a big heart.

Diana is a subtle mix between “your best friend”, a lady boss and a slavic princess (she is Polish). She is really cool, I am serious : go and take a look at her blog and you will understand what I mean.

Bo is meanwhile super nice, friendly, the kind of guy who make you fell immediately confortable with (he is Scottish, which may explain that…). He is also a juicing specialist who has lost a lot of weight thanks to this technique. Wanting to share his knowledge and experience, he also organizes some workshops on Ibiza. Do not hesitate to contact him on this subject, he will love to help you. ☺ He is really passionate.

The shooting started. It was really perfect, it was warm outside (15 degrees) and the light was soft. I have guided them obviously (I still have some poses in mind before arriving depending on the location, the number of people, etc.) but I especially let the magic operates. Their complicity and their love were obvious, radiant. A real pleasure to photograph. Especially as they were both very comfortable in front of my camera. I think we can say that we had fun all three. I also keep a special memory of their cats, totally awesome who wanted absolutely to be part of the adventure!

I really enjoyed to meet them and to spend time with them to immortalize this magic.
This shoot leaves me with the impression of a daydream. A daydream from the beginning to the end.

Here few photographs, I hope you will like them.
